For this week’s AHL Simulation of the Week, we are in Manchester, New Hampshire for an Atlantic Division matchup between the Portland Pirates and the hometown Monarchs. The Pirates currently sit in the middle of the Eastern Conference but have quite a few teams breathing down their necks. For the Monarchs, there are four points and three teams standing between them and the eighth seed. With both teams needing this victory, you should expect a tough battle. The puck drops at 7:00 PM ET.
After all is said and done, the hometown Monarchs could not contain the Pirates as they fall 3-1 at home. The scoring began late in the first as Ethan Werek managed to get one by goalie Martin Jones. The Pirates would double their lead midway through the second when Darian Dziurzynski scored, thanks in part to some fine passing from teammates David Rundblad and Phil Lane.
In the third, Manchester would get on the score-sheet when Brian O’Neill connected on a Bryan Rodney pass. They would pull their goalie in the final minute of the game in the hopes of getting the equalizer and forcing overtime. Unfortunately for them, Rundblad would make it a two point night for himself and give the Pirates the win when he slid the puck into the empty net.
The Pirates would sweep the Three Star honors with goalie Mark Visentin being named the game’s First Star behind his 31-save performance. A goal and an assist was enough to earn David Rundblad the Second Star with Darian Dziurynski being named Third Star as his goal was credited as the game-winner.
