Origin 8.5 Introduces Custom Avatars And Extends Cloud Storage

Today's release of Origin 8.5 makes some of your most frequently requested features a reality. Not only have we added the ability to customize your avatar and hide your games, but we've also strengthened our existing foundations, making Origin faster, safer, and easier to use.

One of the biggest changes in 8.5 is the ability to upload custom avatars. Whereas users were previously required to choose from a gallery of pre-defined images, it is now possible to upload an avatar image directly from your computer. Visit the Settings menu in the Origin client to set your new pic.

Origin 8.5 also grants users the option to hide games in their Game Library, allowing for cleaner management of demos and games.

Last – but certainly not least – Origin 8.5 extends cloud storage options to a number of new games, including Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and the upcoming Mass Effect 3. Save to the cloud to access in-game progress from any Origin-enabled PC.

Want to know what else has changed? Take a look at the official release notes for Origin 8.5 below:

  • Added the ability to upload custom avatars.
  • Added cloud storage support for a number of additional EA games, including Mass Effect 3.
  • Added captcha verification for increased security.
  • Improved relevancy of friend search results.
  • Progress bar now displays when installing games.
  • Streamlined Origin update and installation processes.
  • Game Add-Ons (DLC) can now be purchased and installed directly through Origin.
  • Updated the look and feel of the Origin client.
  • Users can now invite multiple friends to play at once.
  • Users can now hide games in their Game Library.

Not bad. You guys are certainly going the right way. Now you need to integrate Origin friend lists and EA friends lists together. I hate having separate lists for every single EA game, it's really stupid actually.

While the separate friends list thing can be inconvenient, it's probably a difficult thing to fix. I'm sure it will happen eventually.

After updating to this version Origin will no longer start on my computer. Previous version (re installed) will only allow me to "update", "offline", or "cancel". I can't seem to get a working Origin client running at this point

same here, it just opened a dos window for a split second but I got mine to run. Do the following: Open up the Origin folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin or C:\Program Files\Origin. Look for the OriginClientService and double click it, then double click the originTMP file I believe it was called (might have to open it a couple times), then a couple files got cleaned up and it opened up normally. Works fine now as well. Seems that it didn't overwrite the main exe properly.

After testing the install on another computer to confirm it works I did end up getting it to work on the system that initialy gave me problems but it involved reinstalling Win7.

B.S. they haven't been able to do a thing to help me. I have been toiling around for almost four hours and have talked to three different people with no one fixing my problem at all. The last one I talked to kicked me off without allowing me to reply. That was after waiting 30 min to talk to him.

If you are going to copy Steam, please include the much easier interface. The concept of having a browser open to find a server is not very intuitive...just saying!

Although Origin and steam are in many ways alike, they are not identical. The goals of each are to meet the needs of players in regard to accessibility, convenience, and overall gameplay. Updates are meant to integrate new ideas based on what would make the program better serve us. If you were to make a list of features that you would want in a gaming engine such as Origin or Steam, both would have to meet those needs and they'd likely end up being a lot alike. So, saying that Origin is copying Steam is quite Ignorant. As Players post their objections and ideas, the developers will do things to improve our gaming experience. New ideas and technology are always on the rise.

@xOriginalPauperx, If you are looking for a good browser instead of the damn other crappy browsers laging your game out check this out. I use it and it is greaat : http://bf3.realmware.co.uk/battlelog-standalone/downloads It is called BattleField standalone. It replaces the other browsers so you don't have to have them open. They also have other really good tools too. Hope this helps

No complaints here. And I appreciate the ability to hide games, that was driving me nuts looking at the beta games, and I couldn't get rid of them once they were marked unreleased. I would like to say that the server manager is not particularly my favorite, but some plus sides... My favorites and stats go with me at all times, and the cloud solution *shrugs*, it's somewhat a standard nowadays, nice add. Thanks Origin.

Perhaps you should change your settings so that Origin wont start untill you do so yourself...All you have to do is go to settings and change the start up option.

Ability for doing local backups like steam does would be great for those of us with slow internet connections. Also I wouldl like to import all my purchased Bioware DLC into my Origin account.

Looks like you're headed in the right direction. However, (this directed at the comment to integrate the game friends list with the EA friends list) Please keep the game friends list and EA friends list separate (I keep the EA friends list empty). Don't get me wrong, I like hanging with my friends, but there are times when I want to be able to just login and go play a game without those same friends hassling me to come play a different game. Maybe, I'm playing Dragonage (singleplayer game), and don't want to play BF3 right now. I'm glad of the fact I can't be messaged while I'm in the middle of slaying a dragon :). It saves from having to hurt a friends feelings by not having to say "Sorry but I'm doing something else right now" Just sayin.

All I have to say is....you're not looking at the interface correctly then @DEATHSTRIKER1111. Why? Because there's a feature in Origin that allows you to set your status basically, just as if you were on xbox 360. You have the option to show that you're ONLINE, AWAY, OR JUST MAKE YOURSELF INVISIBLE TO ALL THAT MAY BE ONLINE!! If no one sees you online, they wouldn't contact you to play any other game.....right? Just saying.....

You're an idiot. If you're gonna get that pissed over a game crashing because of an update by the parent client that you need to cancel a preorder, you should just cancel your Origin account and save us all from your meaningless b*t(h|ng.
